Meditation Courses

Why Meditation and Mindfulness?
Most of us are aware that our minds are too busy; that we create enormous stress in our lives by having over-active minds. The question remains however, what can we do about it?
One tried and tested means of correcting this imbalance is to practice meditation. For the last 3000 years at least, humans have found they can rediscover an inner peace and well-being through its practice.
And over the last few decades, doctors and researchers have also carried out a significant amount of research into the effectiveness of meditation. Through their research they have validated the following benefits:
  • reduced tension and anxiety
  • increase tolerance of stress
  • reduced insomnia
  • improved learning, memory and concentration
  • improved ability to relate to others
  • slowing of the aging process
  • increased energy
  • improved general health and physical functioning of the body
  • greater capacity to enjoy life
Who are these courses for?
These courses are for anyone who wishes to discover the benefits of meditation. No previous experience is required, no particular beliefs necessary. All you need is an open mind, a little patience and a desire to learn an age-old practice.

What is the format of the classes?

Each term, a 'course book' (e.g.The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle) is used and this forms the heart of the learning material.
The book should be read before term begins.
Students arrive 10 minutes before the class begins, with tea and biscuits available. Once settled, we sit (on a cushion or chair) to begin the session with a short 'check-in'. This is followed by a 10-15 minute guided meditation and a short talk on the current chapter of the Course book. Finally, the subject matter is opened up for discussion amongst the group, allowing us to explore ways in which we can bring peace and equanimity into our lives.
All the courses, regardless of the particular book we are studying, will convey a number of key skills, including ways to enter meditation, deepen your understanding of ancient spiritual practices and let go of habitual stress.

Which books are used?
We use many different books and it changes each term, to keep the material fresh. Generally for the beginner's courses, we use Eckhart Tolle's books (The Power of Now and A New Earth.) And for the more experienced group, a new book is announced some weeks before the start of each term. (see Course dates)

Group Size?
Courses are run in St Vincent's Church Hall at 36 Altenburg Gardens, SW11. Numbers are limited to around 20 students per session.
Please note that the courses book up well in advance of the term start date, with a waiting list in operation thereafter. All places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
